Today wasn’t just another day at the Simola Hillclimb— it was a day where the roar of engines met the weight of silence. A day that reminded us that speed, passion, and risk are all intertwined.
A Morning Like Any Other—Until It Wasn’t
The day started almost routinely— early breakfast, a rush to the track, and with the weather looking clearer, I decided it was safe enough to take my Mustang back to the parking area. No more muddy drama—just confidence and dry ground.
The atmosphere was buzzing as the drivers warmed up, engines purring like lions shaking off sleep. I found a comfortable spot in the VIP lounge, surrounded by food, energy, and the anticipation of another intense day on the hill. I even took a moment to go live on TikTok—sharing the excitement and the incredible views.
Then it happened...
The Loss of a Legend
While the event was unfolding with its usual mix of speed and thrill, tragedy struck. Pieter Joubert, driving his yellow Lotus with a Mercedes motor, was involved in a devastating accident during a warm-up lap.
About an hour later, the news was gently delivered to the media team— Pieter had passed away at the scene.
I didn’t know Pieter personally. But when I heard the news, I cried. Because motorsport may be built on horsepower and skill, but it’s driven by human spirit. And today, we lost someone who lived that spirit with passion.
Motorsport is risky. We know this. We choose this. But losing one of our own? It never gets easier.
The Race Continues—In His Honor
With a heavy heart, the Simola Hillclimb continued— not out of disrespect, but in honor of Pieter’s legacy. That’s the essence of motorsport—pushing forward even when it hurts.
The King of the Hill battle intensified as the day unfolded, with the roar of engines cutting through the collective grief. There were a few more incidents on the track, but none as severe as the morning’s loss.
The final battle came down to two titans: Pieter Zeelie in his red-hot Toyota, and Reghard Roets in his BB Motorsport black beast. They fought hard, pushed the limits, and in the end— Zeelie and his Toyota claimed the victory.

Well done, Mr. Zeelie.
Today, your win carries more weight than ever.
A Day to Remember
Today wasn’t just about competition. It was about remembering a man who lived his passion. It was about honoring his courage by continuing to race. And it was about the reality that motorsport, despite all its beauty and power, can break your heart.
Rest in peace, Pieter Joubert.
May you drive fast and free on the corners of heaven.
We’ll remember you every time the engines fire up—
because that’s how legends live on.
